Welcome to the Grossmont Strings Page:
My name is Karen Childress-Evans and I am the Artistic Director to the Grossmont Strings.
My education includes a BA in Education and BA in Music Performance from Washington State University; an MA in Curriculum and Instruction from SDSU; and Ed.S. in Educational Leadership from PLNU, and an Ed.D. in Ed. Leadership from Alliant International University. I have performed in numerous symphony orchestras, ensembles, and as solo artist and currently play viola in the groups Sentimental Journey and Enter the Blue Sky. I am honored to be able to work with such amazing young people as the Grossmont students.
Grossmont Strings continues to grow in size and improve musically. This year we have 28 students enrolled in the Orchestra and 14 violin students in Beginning Strings. I am delighted with their passion for music and their desire to improve and to try new and challenging music.
Karen Childress-Evans, Ed.D.
Our semester finished with a very successful Winter Concert on December 14. Previous performance events included a performance with the East County Youth Symphony, November 21, at the Kroc/Salvation Army Center; a small ensemble performance for Holiday in the Village in downtown La Mesa on December 10, and a quartet performance at Grossmont Center on December 13.
This spring we are looking forward to the following events:
1) School Talent Show
2) Solo and Ensemble Festival (TBD)
3) Orchestra Adjudicated Festival (TBD)
4) The Annual Dessert Show and Fundraiser
5) Spring Concert
6) And much more...
We want to thank Friends of East County Arts for their generous grant of $650 to pay for strings and accessories for our growing ensembles. Thank you to all our parents and community members who have supported our students on their musical journey. And a special thank you to Ms. Alexandra Keegan, Director of the East County Youth Symphony, for inviting us to perform on their last concert.
We are currently looking for donations to fund a San Diego Symphony concert for our students in the spring. Buses and admission are costly especially at this time of year. If you are interested in making a contribution to the Grossmont Strings, please contact the Grossmont Instrumental Music Association (GIMA) by visiting our music page and clicking on the fundraising button.
